Alberta officially recognizes Black History Month

Today, Premier Rachel Notley proclaimed February as Black History Month, recognizing the contributions people of African and Caribbean descent have made to the province.

It was my privilege to introduce Mrs. Deborah Dobbins from the Shiloh Centre for Multicultural Roots and Jesse Lipscombe who are direct descendants from the original black settlers.

We were joined by Culture & Tourism Minister Ricardo Miranda, Dr. Mertella Montague from the National Black Coalition of Canada as well as a number of African & Caribbean associations such as the Afrika Diaspora History Library, Ogaden Somali Community of Alberta Residents - OSCAR, Africa Centre, Jamaica Association of Northern Alberta - JANA, Canavua Edmonton, Kenyan Community of Alberta, Sierra Leone Association of Alberta, Reez Commuinity Foundation, Somali Canadian Women & Children Association, and the Wellness & Prevention Centre for African Canadians of Alberta.
